Fun Christmas Crafty Idea

My mom did these at preschool a couple of years ago. We have one from Zoe when she was three which we keep over the fireplace.

I did these with the children that I babysit to give to their parents as Christmas presents. Below are a couple of examples. Note that the snowmen are actually the kids feet!

The Bear and the Atheist

An atheist was walking through the woods. What majestic trees; what powerful rivers; what beautiful animals, he said to himself.
As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the
bushes behind him. He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charging
towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder and
saw that the bear was closing in on him. He looked over his shoulder again, and the bear was even closer. He
tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but
saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left
paw and raising his right paw to strike him.

At that instant the Atheist cried out, 'Oh my God!' At that exact moment time stopped and the bear froze. As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. 'You deny my existence, teach others I don't exist, and even credit creation to cosmic accident. Yet you expect me to help you out of this predicament?

The atheist looked directly into the light and said, 'it would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but
perhaps you could make the BEAR a Christian?’ 'Very Well,' said the voice.

The light went out and the sounds of the forest resumed. The bear dropped
his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head & spoke:
'Lord, bless this food, which I am about to receive from thy bounty
through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Houston....we have a poo poo!!!

Weird title, I know, but if you'd been waiting for as long as I have....you'd probably have had it bronzed!

I am speaking of my Hannah-bear, middle child, and difficult potty trainer. We have been peeing in the potty for the longest time but to poop....well you might as well have asked her to give up her favorite blanket...it just wasn't happening!

Last night, without warning, she went into the bathroom and came out with the evidence. To say that we were thrilled would have been an understatement...to say the least....let's just say we considered photographing it for posterity; and, I can already hear the sighs of relief that we didn't.

Anyway, I just wanted to give Hannah a shout out for her accomplishment....YEA HANNAH-BEAR...YOU GO GAL!

She's Walking!!

Well, we have been waiting for this moment for six months! She had the skills at 12 months but just recently has she decided to use those legs that God gave her all on her own. She has been cruising off of practically anything she could get her hands on since she was a year old BUT refused to just 'let go and walk.

Now she has decided that this walking thing is pretty cool out in the middle of the floor too! She still uses the 'booty scoot boogie' whenever she wants to get somewhere fast...as the walking free handed still needs practice...but at least she is walking!!

Thanks goodness! For a while I thought I was going to have to carry her through life! Here she is all proud of herself and everything!

Happy Birthday Zoe....Six Years Old

My sweetest Zoe, my first born, how much you have grown and changed in these past six years. It seems like a lifetime ago that I met your father and married him. When we talked about having a sweet baby we had no idea that she would be as wonderful and gifted as you! I remember the excitement and nervousness I had when I found out that I was pregnant. I also remember the prayers and dreams that I had for you. It is a great honor for me to be able to see you grow and change as well as be able to help guide and raise you into the beautiful woman that God wants you to be.

You have brought so much joy and love into my life and you have so many wonderful adventures ahead of you as you grow and change; live, love, learn and experience all that life has to offer. I feel so blessed and proud to be a part of it all and am very excited to see what God has in store for you.

I love you so very much and am SO VERY PROUD to be your mommy! HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEETHEART!!

Hurricane Gustav Update

Hey everyone! I just thought that I would update you on our status as of Monday Afternoon regarding Hurricane Gustav.

It came on land south of New Orleans around 8:00am this morning and was not the monster that we feared 24 hours earlier. As of 12:30, we have not lost power or satellite and there seems to be not much, if any real damage in our area. We feel very thankful to have come through this hurricane as we have....especially with hurricane Katrina memories still buzzing around in our heads and hearts.

God has truly blessed us in SO many ways this Labor Day...which will be one to remember for sure!

From our family to yours...

Happy Labor Day!

Time to Eat...Yummy Yummy!!

She's riding the "yellow school bus"...oh boy!!

Well Zoe finally got to ride on the school bus or the squirrel bus #3 as she calls it. To make it easier for the Kindergarten students, the buses are labeled with pictures next to the number to make it easier for them to remember which bus is theirs. Of course, bus number three is not hard for her to remember, but she enjoys calling it the "squirrel bus" as well.
She really likes riding the bus so far as you can see below! More to come......

First Day of Kindergarten....at BIG SCHOOL

Well Zoe's first day of school was yesterday but the anticipation began several days ago. She got the teacher that she wanted and two of her friends are in her class so I couldn't ask for a better start than that! She is not crazy about the uniforms OR hair bows but reluctantly 'decided' to wear them after...well ya know!

I have attached some pictures to help express the 'excitement' of the day.

No she is NOT a morning person....well not this morning...'butterflies' and so on! Nan dropped her off and picked her up on her first day. Mark is off on Friday so that he can both take and pick her up.

She had a great first day and liked bringing her lunchables pizza...even if she had to eat it cold! She has the cutest frog lunch box that I will have to photograph and show you soon! All in all, I am very pleased with how she is settling in!

Here she is with her morning face on (smile)

Here she is arriving home after her first day.

Potty Training.....

When Hannah turned three, and still was not potty trained, I figured that she was just going to "live" in pull ups for the rest of her life. Not only was she not potty trained, she had no desire to even become potty trained. She seemed to show no interest and whenever I asked her about it she'd say, "No, I don't want to." She'd do this over and over again, all in her matter of fact way!

Well this week Zoe had to go for assessment testing for Kindergarten which I used as a tool of discussion with Hannah concerning her preschool. I told her that this year she had to be potty trained (which is actually in the preschool handbook for three year olds). Now they have never 'kicked' a preschooler out for still using pull ups and having accidents BUT I saw it as the perfect opportunity to explain to Hannah that it was indeed TIME!! I could 'see' her thinking about it and when my mom asked her if she wanted to go potty with her Hannah said yes. Well she sat on her special little potty and actually went! Of course we make a huge deal out of it--you'd have thought we'd struck oil!!

The rest is history, as she is now going--unprompted as well as reminded from time to time. She uses it, brings it to show me, cleans it out AND puts it back together. I can't tell you how thrilled I am that she wants to do this. I had cleaned it out at first and put it back together with her watching me. When she figured out how I was doing it, she wanted to take over. Oh yes, when she is done she washes her hands too! What a chip off the block!!

So far she has not pooped in the potty--still in the pull ups--but I told her that it was ok to poop in the potty too and that mommy would clean her up really good just like when she went in the pull up. Not that I relish cleaning the potty of that BUT better me than her on that item!!

I am sooooo relieved that she has made this MILESTONE marker!! I was beginning to think that I was going to have to hire someone to come in and teach her to use the potty but the motivation finally struck....and the chocolate treat after probably didn't hurt either!

Playtime....at my house!!

Thursday, July 31, 2008

She's BAAAACK!!!!

Well, Zoe has returned and the house will be a little less peaceful (sister's have disagreements) and quiet (at least we always know where she is) but we are very happy to have her home!
Hannah, in fact, waited up for her on Tuesday night. She did not want to go to sleep without seeing her sister first.
Zoe came home full of stories about her trip! She said that she was a little nervous to fly home (the flight delay didn't help much) but once she got on the plane she was fine. In fact, she said that she had a 'boyfriend' on the plane but she couldn't remember his name. I think that she was very happy to have a 'friend' on the plane and it made the flight more enjoyable! She said that they shared her snacks and her colors and coloring book.

She said that she really enjoyed being at her Uncle David's house even though "the little boys and girl got spankings"....she was afraid that she was next...I reminded her that they were all brothers and sisters just like she and Hannah...then it made sense to her! She also said that she enjoyed swimming with them and going to the Children's Museum with them.

All in all, she had such a wonderful time going to all the new places and doing the different activities but was ready to come home by Tuesday night! She said that she would be ready to go back next year and do it all over again! I am sure that Papa Hat and Grandma Sally will be looking forward to that!

...Next great adventure...KINDERGARTEN!

Registered....ready or not!!!

Well, I registered Zoe for Kindergarten today! Yes,I said Kindergarten! I can't believe it and yet it seems as if she's been with me all of my life! She certainly has made an impact in my life and is growing and changing all the time!
Today is her last day in Virginia with her grandparents as she will be flying home tomorrow...still don't know if I am ready for that!
Anyway, my learning and growing as a parent seems to be in sync with her as she grows. I guess that is the way God planned it and aside from those darn growing pains; I wouldn't have it any other way!

Having a BLAST!

As I said in my last post, Zoe had arrived in Virginia and was very excited to be there. On Friday she went to VBS with Uncle David and her cousins. After VBS, he took them to McDonald's...which is always a treat...then to the Library for story hour. She then returned to Papa Hat and Grandma Sally's house with Katrina and Victoria. That evening she said that she ate macaroni and cheese, corn and taco meat and remarked to me that it was, "so wonderful"! As I was on Skype with her, she showed me the firefly's that she had caught that evening. She had been wanting to catch firefly's ever since she found out that she was going to Virginia so it was quite the treat!

Saturday, she went to spend the night at David's and is going to church with them today. Sally said that she was quite agreeable and was quite helpful with fixing drinks and cracking eggs. She also said that her disposition was very nice! I can't tell you how happy I was to hear that! You try to raise your children properly but are never really sure how they will act upon being out of your reach. It is nice to know that she is applying what we have taught her! We are so proud of her!

We will Skype again tonight when she returns from David's house and I am sure that I will have lots to blog about tomorrow! I am just so happy that she is having such a good time visiting the family!

She has arrived!!

We got a call last evening around 10:30. The plane had landed and Zoe was on her way to Grandpa Pat's house. She was full of excitement as she relayed to me the events of the evening. The plane was delayed by an hour. To pass the time, she found two girls to share her crayons and coloring book with. She told me that the plane's bathroom was purple and it went bump...bump...bump...when it took off. She said she saw clouds, rain and the lights of the cities below her window. Sally said that she was very entertaining to the other passengers on the plane because of her childlike wonder with flying.

She was tired but very happy as she talked with me on the phone. She then talked to daddy, Hannah and wanted to talk with Kayci but she was sleeping.
Today, she has gone to story hour at the library with Grandpa Pat and is going to a puppet show with him tomorrow! All in all, it has been a great beginning for her and I am waiting with fevered anticipation for more adventures to come. We will "skype" tonight and I am sure that I will have more to discuss tomorrow!

Until then, Zoe has arrived!!

Virginia or BUST

"Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body."
~Elizabeth Stone

Zoe is on a plane as I blog...headed for Virginia and I feel the words of the quote above with full empathy. She was excited...to say the least. Having never ridden in a plane before, she has expectations which include among them "cloud catching"! I am sure that she is after those clouds right now!
She is spending the next five days with her Grandpa Pat and Grandma Sally. She will also be visiting her Uncle David and his clan! Sally says that they have a lot planned for her to do and I am sure that she will get NO sleep tonight thinking about it!
However, the most interesting part of the trip for me, will be her flight back on Tuesday. You see, she will be an unaccompanied minor...and be "watched over" by her very own flight attendant.(WOW...still not sure that I am ready for that!!) Boy, I wish I could be the person seated next to or near her on the return trip and listen as she relays the adventures of her trip!

Lord, seems like I just gave birth to her yesterday and today she is a big time traveler...well almost. Here are a couple of pictures I took of her before she left this afternoon...please excuse the chips in the teeth but she was in a hurry...lots of things to do and places to go ya know!!

...There be Pirates here!!

Zoe had been asking to go on a treasure hunt, another of Noggin's goodies we learned about in 'Summer Fun', so Mark decided to make a treasure map and have Zoe and Hannah go on a pirate treasure hunt. It was great fun to watch as Zoe tried to figure out the clues as well as read her "treasure map" Hannah was the perfect parrot, literately speaking, she does repeat lots of things that people say. The two of them made for quite an amusing pair of treasure hunters....look out Nicholas Cage...you may have competition!

Happy 4th of July from the O'Neils

Our 4th of July was really a treat! My good friend Candace and her family came over for a swimming, food and fireworks celebration! Even though it rained some, we still managed to have a fun time swimming and doing fireworks. Hannah still watched most of the fireworks from inside but she did come out for the sparklers. Kayci just loved watching all of the fireworks and she got so excited she just shook all over...it was too funny. Zoe dressed in flannel because she said she didn't want to get burned AT ALL...those pesky sparks have always found her in the past...needless to say, she gave us all heatstroke! Mark got plenty of exercise running back and forth to light the fireworks and he even ran away from some that didn't go quite as planned (smile)! All in all it was a fun and relaxing evening as well as a great kick off to Mark's vacation week.

Adventures with Egghead...Chapter One

Zoe has taken an interest in art as it applies to gardening thanks in part to Noggin (see Direct TV 298 or www.mynoggin.com
Anyway, she has decided to grow her own 'egghead' and we decided to keep a online journal about it here on the blog.

First, you need an egg and the best way to get one is to eat one!

After eating, mom carefully cleans out the inside of the egg to get it ready for painting. Next, paint the egg any color and add a face!

Letting the egg dry is a very important step but it sure can be hard waiting!! Once the egg is dry, fill the inside with wet cotton and sprinkle in the seeds. We are using chive seeds.

Lastly, place in a window and wait for the seeds to sprout and grow. Remember keep that cotton moist so check your egghead daily!

Stay tuned for more exciting egghead adventures to come!!

The "Stars" are out tonite!!

The girls are really into storytelling and stories right now and one thing that Zoe really loves to do is act out the stories. Last night, she, Hannah, and Mark acted out the story of the Three Little Pigs....with modified content...in the way of the number of pigs. All in all, it was a wonderful reenactment even with the occasional ad lib and shift in storyline. Hope you enjoy!

Three Red Marbles

Boy! When I get good forwards....I get GOOD forwards!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was at the corner grocery store buying some early potatoes.

I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily apprizing a basket of freshly picked green peas.

I paid for my potatoes, but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas.

I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes. Pondering the peas, I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller (the store owner) and the ragged boy next to me.

'Hello Barry, how are you today?'

'H'lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus' admirin' them peas. They sure look good.'

'They are good, Barry. How's your Ma?'

'Fine. Gittin' stronger alla' time.'

'Good. Anything I can help you with?'

'No, Sir. Jus' admirin' them peas.'

'Would you like take some home?' asked Mr. Miller.

'No, Sir. Got nuthin' to pay for 'em with.'

'Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?'

'All I got's my prize marble here.'

'Is that right? Let me see it' said Miller.

'Here 'tis. She's a dandy.'

'I can see that. Hmmmmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?' the store owner asked.

'Not zackley but almost.'

'Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble', Mr. Miller told the boy.

'Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller.'

Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me.

With a smile said, 'There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever.

When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn't like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, when they come on their next trip to the store.'

I left the store smiling to myself, impressed with this man.

A short time later I moved to Colorado , but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering for marbles.

Several years went by, each more rapid than the previous one.

Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died.

They were having his visitation that evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them.

Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could.

Ahead of us in line were three young men.

One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts...all very professional looking.

They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband's casket.

Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket.

Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one, each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket.

Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes.

Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and reminded her of the story from those many years ago and what she had told me about her husband's bartering for marbles.

With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket.

'Those three young men who just left were the boys I told you about. They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim 'traded' them.

Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size...they came to pay their debt.'

'We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world,' she confided, 'but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho '.

With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three exquisitely shined red marbles.

From A Six Year Old's Perspective

Dog's Purpose, (from a 6-year-old)

I am so glad to receive, amongst the pile of random forwards, a gem email once in a while that is worth the read!

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old
Irish wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa,
and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they
were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the
family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform
the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would
be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt
as though Shane might learn something from the experience

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's
family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for
the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.
Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any
difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's
death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are
shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly,
piped up, 'I know why.'

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next
stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good
life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The
six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so
they don't have to stay as long.'

WOW what a life lesson for all of us~

I got the GOLD STAR!!

Well I went to see the Diabetes Doctor yesterday and she awarded me the GOLD STAR! She was thrilled with all of my blood work results and weight loss.

To date I have lost 40 lbs and my test results are as follows:

---My sugar average is 103---which means I have normal blood sugar and I am causing no damage to my body...meaning Kidney, Liver functions and all blood levels are within a normal range.

---Three months ago my total cholesterol level was 235 and it is now 180. My bad LDL cholesterol was 160 and is now 119....my goal is 100 > HOWEVER....I am out of the danger level because 101-129 is considered to be near optimal though 100 and less is the target that the American Heart Association says we should all strive for.

She still has me on Byetta at 5mcg 2x a day and I will probably stay on that for the rest of my life but it is not insuln so that is fantastic!

All in all it was a great visit and I was very pleased and relieved when I left her office!

A Tribute to my Dad

Dad,

Words can not appropriately express the gratitude that I feel in my heart when I think about you as my daddy! I think back to my childhood and remember how excited I'd get when I saw your truck pull up at the end of the day. Even before that, I remember mom picking me up on cold nights, bundling me up, and driving to pick you up when you hauled the "big rigs".

When I think of you I think of the qualities that made and make you the man you are today; strength, perseverance, dedication, temperance, loyalty, respect, and love for family! I did not realize how important those qualities were or would be in my life fully until now! I want to thank you for sharing those qualities with me as well as kicking my rear on a regular basis to keep me steady and focused on the goal!
I will never be able to tell you how important it was that you did that....although I think that you already knew! I am so proud to have you as my father and now as a friend and counsel when needed.

I know that it was your guidance and love that helped shape me into the person I am today and the person that I will be for my family! I want to thank you for that!

I am glad that there is a day set aside for think about our parents and what they have done and been for us as children growing up.

I love you dad and will always be your little girl!

Lynn

On your third...Hannah Paige

My Sweet Hannah...I remember when you were born. Of all three girls, you were the easiest during childbirth...I think you were ready to get going and you have not stopped since! Your life was exciting pretty much from birth as Hurricane Katrina came through and relocated us for about ten days to your Papa Hat and Grandma Sally's house! You traveled very well though and really enjoyed riding in the car.
You are all personality with your curly hair and brown eyes and are perhaps mommy's best helper around the house....being most like me! We almost share the same birthday too (yours on the 14th and mine on the 15th)
I have loved spending these past three years with you and look forward to watching you grow up into a beautiful young woman!
I love and cherish you so much and am so proud to be your mommy!

Happy Third Birthday Hannah!

Wow! A lot has happened since the last time I posted! I had originally intended to create a post for Hannah, my middle gal, in honor of her birthday on June 14th; however, I had some problems. My youngest, Kayci, got sick on Saturday with a high fever...which was also the day of Hannah's Birthday party. We had the party anyway and it was really fun although we did not get to take the amount of photos we had intended. It was a small party with family and close friends so it was very relaxed and funny as Hannah kept sneaking small bites of her cake and going under the table as if we could not see her!
It rained some but quickly blew over so the kids did get to swim.
Hannah did end up getting sick after her party with the same virus that Kayci had....Zoe contracted it on Sunday so I have not gotten to post my tribute to my Dad yet either. Such is the life with kids though! Kayci and Hannah are pretty much over it today (Monday) but Zoe will need another day to recoup. All in all, It was a good weekend and Hannah did have a fine time and is playing with her legos as we speak!

Vacation Bible School

Zoe got to attend VBS at Roseland Park Church last week with Kirby, and she had a blast! We went to the "hoe down" on Friday Night... yes...western theme...and it was a hoot! She and Kirby, of course, stood together and got the giggles about half way through their song. She got to make some cute arts and crafts including this vest...made from a paper grocery bag that she decorated. On the back was a big yellow star that said, "Wanted...by GOD"; it was really cute! She already said she wants to do it again next year!

Pussy Cat; Pussy Cat I love you.....Yes I Do!!

Mud Bug Fun

Yesterday we had a crawfish boil. Because Mark was off, he offered to cook them. Candace, my good friend, bought the crawfish and brought over her cooker. We added potatoes, corn, mushrooms & sausage. Mark worked his magic and we enjoyed wonderfully, prepared mudbugs, cajun style. Here are some pictures of the little guys pre-cooked while Zoe and Hannah "played" with them and marveled at their big claws! It was a fun evening of eating, swimming and enjoying a good time with each other.
